Santiago was accompanied to the evaluation by his mother who served as the informant. According to mother Santiago was diagnosed with Autism when Santiago was 2 years old. However, mother stated that she similarly suspects Santiago has ADHD due to his difficulty remaining on task and/or walking away as soon as he loses interest in an activity/task. Mother stated that Santiago utilizes about 100 words to label and/or comment, but claims to have difficulty understanding Santiago’s expressive verbalizations. According to mother, Santiago will lead his communication partner to the object of desire and will use repetitive “babbling” to communicate his wants/needs. Based on clinical observations, Santiago’s current communication was characterized as use of 1 word phrases mixed with jargon and word approximations, and delayed echolalia. Santiago required constant redirection from his mother to reengage with the assessment and/or not to leave the therapy room. Javier attempted to repeat the last word heard and/or demonstrated delayed echolalia when questions were directed towards him. According to mother, Santiago will imitate 1-word phrases using word approximations and jargon, but is inconsistent. Overall, Santiago’s pragmatic skills presented with more weaknesses than strengths.

Santiago has been diagnosed with a profound mixed receptive-expressive language disorder. Santiago would greatly benefit from speech therapy services that address the following functionally appropriate concepts: responding to "no" and "wait," following one step commands, relational play, naming/labeling via word approximations, imitation of monosyllabic words, and use of functional communication to express wants/needs. Once the office has processed the report, they obtain the needed signatures, and insurance approves the report, the assigned treating therapist will reach out to you to discuss beginning treatment.
