Speech Background History: Priscilla is a young child referred for a speech-language evaluation due to concerns regarding limited communication and responsiveness. Mother reported a pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes and preeclampsia, which resulted in an early delivery. No complications were reported at the time of birth. Mother reported that at approximately 8 months of age, Priscilla experienced a fall from a bed with head impact; however, medical follow-up did not identify any concerns and no ongoing effects were reported. Developmentally, Priscilla achieved gross motor milestones, including crawling and walking, at approximately 15 months of age. Priscilla currently remains at home with her mother and is not taking any medications. Mother reported concerns regarding sleep regulation, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep. Mother also expressed concerns regarding hearing. Priscilla reportedly passed her newborn hearing screening but did not pass a later screening. During the evaluation, Priscilla demonstrated awareness of sound, as evidenced by tracking and localizing rattle sounds. Continued audiological monitoring is recommended to rule out hearing-related contributions to communication delays. Mother reported that Priscilla is exposed to both English and Spanish in the home environment; however, Spanish is the primary language she hears throughout the day due to frequent interaction with grandparents. Mother reported that Priscilla enjoys playing with balls. Primary concerns at this time include limited verbal communication, reduced responsiveness to others, and minimal engagement in social interaction.
