Leyla was born full term with no reported pregnancy, birth, or postnatal complications. Per parent report, early developmental milestones including crawling and walking were achieved within normal limits. Mother reported that speech and language development was delayed. She shared that she previously brought up concerns regarding Leyla’s speech development to her pediatrician; however, she was informed at that time that Leyla’s development was within expected limits. Mother reported that more significant concerns became evident once Leyla began attending pre-kindergarten. At that time, she noticed that Leyla was not pronouncing her words clearly and that familiar and unfamiliar listeners frequently had difficulty understanding what she was saying. Mother reported that Leyla currently attends school two days per week and is homeschooled for the remainder of the week. In terms of social and behavioral characteristics, Leyla was described as a shy child who may take time to warm up in new environments; however, once comfortable, she is able to engage appropriately and gets along well with others. Mother identified Leyla’s primary area of concern as speech intelligibility, noting that reduced clarity of speech impacts her ability to be understood by others in both academic and social settings.
